Degree Requirements
DEGREE REQUIREMENTS FOR A MAJOR IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE

The major requires 45 credit hours of courses in Criminal Justice and 24 credit hours of supporting classes.

Required Criminal Justice classes (39 hours) include:

CJP 223 Police Practices and Procedures
CJP 233 Criminal Law / Procedures

REQUIREMENTS FOR A MINOR IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE

Students must complete 18 credit hours.

Required:
CJP 113 Introduction to Criminal Justice
CJP 253 Criminology

Of the twelve additional CJP credit hours, six hours (two classes) must be upper division courses; three hours (one class) must be senior level


REQUIREMENTS FOR A MAJOR IN POLITICAL SCIENCE

The major in Political Science consists of a minimum of 36 credit hours, (in addition to the PSC 113 Core requirement) and a maximum of 39 credit hours.
1. The following courses are required:
PSC 123, 143, 203, 233, 253, 373, 363 or 473, and 483.
2. The balance of required semester hours must be selected from the list of Political Science electives:
PSC 133, 223, 263, 313, 323, 333, 353, 383, 423, 443, 453, 463, 493A/B, ECO 213 or ECO 223 or ECO 413.


REQUIREMENTS FOR A MINOR IN POLITICAL SCIENCE

Students must complete 18 credit hours.

1. The following courses are required: PSC 123, 143, 213, and 353.
2. The balance of the credit hours may be selected from the list of required Political Science electives:
PSC 133, 223, 263, 313, 323, 353, 383, 423, 453, 463 and 493A/B.

REQUIREMENTS FOR A MAJOR IN PSYCHOLOGY

Students pursuing a major in Psychology must complete at least 36 credit hours.
1. 24 required hours consisting of the following:
PSY 113 Introduction to Psychology
PSY 333 Theories in Psychology
PSY 293 Human Growth and Development
PSY 453 Senior Seminar
PSY 463 Counseling Theory and Application
PSY 493 Field Experience
PSC 233 Statistics I
PSY/SOC 373 Methods in Social Research or PSY 293 Special Topics: Program Evaluation.
2. 12 hours of Psychology electives are to be taken from the Psychology offerings. One course may be substituted for another with the major advisor’s approval.
3. A student who chooses not to select a minor, must also take SOC 113 Introduction to Sociology and ENG 353 Advanced Composition.
4. Psychology majors must complete a total of 124 hours.
5. PSY 113 is a prerequisite for all other PSY courses.
6. Grades of “D” are unaccepted in the major.
7. Students must have an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher.

REQUIREMENTS FOR A MINOR IN PSYCHOLOGY

Students pursuing a minor in Psychology must complete at least 18 credit hours.
1. The following courses are required for a minor in psychology:
PSY 113 Introduction to Psychology
PSY 263 Human Growth and Development
PSY 333 Theories in Psychology
plus 9 more credit hours excluding PSY 493 Field Placement; and can only include either one of PSY 493 Independent Research or PSY 293 A/B Special Topics in Psychology.
2. PSY 113 is a prerequisite for other PSY courses.
3. Grades of “D” are unaccepted in the minor.
4. Students must receive a grade of “C” or higher in ENG 113 or ENG 123 and must have an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher.

REQUIREMENTS FOR A MAJOR IN SOCIOLOGY

A student majoring in Sociology must complete 37 credit hours.
1. Twenty-five of these hours must be:
SOC 113 Introduction to Sociology
SOC 233 Social Science Statistics I
SOC 353 Social Theory
SOC 373 Methods in Social Research
SOC 393 Interventive Methods of Social Work
SOC 443 Senior Seminar
SOC 484 Field Placement
PSC 203 Information Management for Political and Social Science.
**SOC 113 is a prerequisite for other courses unless otherwise noted.**
2. 12 additional credit hours are to be taken from the Sociology offerings, but cannot be one of the required core courses.
3. A student without a minor must also take PSY 113 and two 300 level English writing courses and receive a “C” or above in each course (total of nine hours).
4. Students may take Cooperative Education as an elective (not a Sociology elective), and it cannot be used as a substitute for SOC 484.
5. Students MUST have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher in the major and overall.
6. Students wishing to emphasize Social Welfare Studies should include in their program the social welfare sequence: SOC 243, 323, 363, 383, 393, and 484.
7. All majors must complete a professional portfolio and pass a comprehensive Sociology exam at 75% or better.


REQUIREMENTS FOR A MINOR IN SOCIOLOGY

A student minoring in Sociology is required to complete 21 credit hours.
1. Required courses are SOC 113 and 393.
2. 15 additional hours.
3. SOC 113 is a prerequisite for other courses unless otherwise noted.
4. No grades of “D” or lower are accepted in the minor.
5. Students MUST receive at least a “C” in ENG 113 and ENG 123.
6. Students may take Cooperative Education as an elective (not a Sociology elective), and it cannot be used as a substitute for SOC 484.
7. Students MUST have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher in the minor and overall.
