Literary Arts

Professional Writing Minor

Huston-Tillotson University’s College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Humanities and Fine Arts offers a degree in English to students interested in the liberal arts, graduate school, and professional careers in the areas where critical thinking and effective communication are valued. The required courses lay the foundation for the successful pursuit of graduate degrees in the humanities, law, communications, education, creative writing, etc., as well as for careers in such fields as teaching, journalism, and publishing.

Students in the English major can choose either the Literary Arts track for the English major or the new Communications Arts track for the Journalism major. Students in the Literary Arts track can also choose to complete teacher certification requirements for secondary education. The program offers all students an English or a Professional Writing Minor. Here at Huston-Tillotson University, it is the mission of the English Program to help students develop the critical thinking, research, reading, writing, and speaking skills necessary for personal and professional success.
English courses include the following:

►Students in either the Literary Arts or the Communication Arts track take courses in language, writing, culture and African American Literature:
• Language and Culture
• Advanced Composition (includes new media composition)
• African American Literature
• Senior Seminar in Literary Arts and Communication Arts

►Students in the Communication Arts track take courses in journalism, news reporting, writing in communication fields, hands-on publication design and production:
• Introduction to Communication Theory and Practice
• Professional Writing Technologies
• Media Analysis
• Visual Storytelling (Photojournalism)
• Media Ethics and Law
• News Reporting and Writing for Media

►Students in the Literary Arts track take courses in literary theory, creative writing, and a wide range of literature from ancient to contemporary poetry, fiction, drama and non-fiction:
• Modern Critical Theory
• Topics in U.S. Literature (e.g., Visions of America, Literature of Revolution)
• Topics in World Literature (e.g., Mexico, Hawaii & Puerto Rico in Performance, Latin American Literature, Caribbean Literature, Women Writers of the African Diaspora)
• Topics in British Literature (e.g., Color in the British Imagination; Poetry from the British Isles to the Caribbean Islands; Medieval Monsters, Maidens and Warriors)
• Topics in Creative Writing (Poetry, Non-Fiction, Fiction)
• Special Topics in Language and Literature, Children and Adolescent Literature, etc.

►Students in any major can complete a Professional Writing Minor, by taking 18-hours of selected writing courses:
• Technical Writing
• Business Communications (offered in the Business department)
• Creative Writing (courses can be repeated for credit when the topic changes)
• Advanced Composition
• Writing for Journalism and Communications (courses can be repeated for credit when the topic changes)
• Advanced Rhetoric and Argumentation
